Asian Californians

By Sucheng Chan
1991, 236 pages, paperback.

Excerpt from the Introduction

In this study, I present a succinct integrated history of the eight major Asian immigrant groups in California within the dual contexts of international relations and California history. It is important to look at the changing relations between the U.S. and the Asian emigrant nations because they have invariably affected how Asian immigrants were treated. California history also forms a backdrop because the changing economy of the golden state and race relations within it have likewise influenced the lives of Asian immigrants and their descendants.

Baseball Saved Us

Written by Ken Mochizuki
Illustrated by Dom Lee
1993, 29 pages, hardback and paperback.

Front Cover Flap of the Hardback

One day, my dad looked out at the endless desert and decided then and there to build a baseball field.

So begins Ken Mochizuki's moving tale of life in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II.

"Shorty" and his family, along with thousands of Japanese Americans, are forced to relocate from their home to a "camp" after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Fighting the heat, dust, and freezing cold nights of the desert, Shorty and the others at the camp need something to look forward to, even if only for nine innings. So they build a playing field, and in this unlikely place, a baseball league is formed.

Surrounded by barbed-wire fences and guards in towers, Shorty soon finds that he is playing not only to win, but to gain dignity and self-respect as well.

Inspired by actual events, Ken Mochizuki's story of hope and courage shows us an almost-forgotten part of the American past.

Heroes

Written by Ken Mochizuki
Illustrated by Dom Lee
1995, 29 pages, hardback and paperback.

Front Cover Flap of the Hardback

Donnie is tired of playing the bad guy every time he and his friends get together to play war. According to the other kids, Donnie should play the enemy-after all, as a Japanese American, he looks like "them."

When he argues that his family served in the U .S. Army, Donnie's friends dare him to prove it. But when he asks his father and uncle for proof, they tell him that kids should play something else besides war. "Real heroes don't brag," Uncle Yosh says. "They just do what they are supposed to do."

Set against the backdrop of the 1960s, and a new conflict in Vietnam, this story explores how one family deals with the painful legacy of war. In their powerful follow-up to Baseball Saved Us, Ken Mochizuki and Dom Lee once again present readers with American heroes they won't usually find in history books, but who they can always hold in their hearts.

Passage to Freedom
The Sugihara Story

Written by Ken Mochizuki
Illustrated by Dom Lee
1997, 32 pages, hardback and paperback.
In 1940 Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat serving in Lithuania, made a heart rendering decision to issue thousands of visas to Jewish refugees - against the recommendations of his government - to allow them to flee the Nazis.

Told through the eyes of his son Hiroki, who was five at the time, it is a touching and well told account of how one person’s courage can make a difference. Lee’s stunning sepia-toned illustrations add power and dignity to this beautiful story.

For children this story will be a lesson in courage and conscience and a valuable addition to Holocaust materials. A story which illustrates the importance of humanity in one’s character. The overriding decision of one man to do the right thing against one’s own government.

It is a book which should be read and appreciated by all children for the moral and ethical values it teaches.

THE GAME of GO: The National Game of Japan

BY ARTHUR SMITH - 1956, Thirty-eighth printing 1994, 220 pages, paperback.

From the cover flaps -
The game of Go is probably the oldest intellectual game in the world. First developed in China over three thousand years ago, the game was introduced to Japan in the eighth century and has since enjoyed ever increasing popularity. Today it commands a vast and enthusiastic following, with a large number of Japanese masters whose skill probably surpasses that ever attained even in China, where there is no longer much knowledge or interest in the game. In the last few decades there has been a growing interest in the game outside Japan as an increasing number of Westerners have discovered the fascination of Go.

The game of Go belongs to the class of games of which chess, though quite dissimilar, is an example. It is a game of pure skill with little room for the element of chance to enter. "Go is not merely a picture of a single battle like Chess, but a whole campaign of a modern kind, in which the strategical movements of the masses in the end decide the victory. Battles occur in various parts of the board, and sometimes several are going on at the same time. Strong positions are besieged and captured, and whole armies are cut off from their line of communications and are taken prisoners unless they can fortify themselves in impregnable positions, and far-reaching strategy alone assures victory . . ."

Arthur Smith, the author, was one of the first Westerners to make a scientific study of the game of Go, and his classic work has never been surpassed for completeness, lucidity, and all-round excellence. The present volume is photographically reproduced from the now rare original edition of 1908. A glossary of Japanese terms used in the game has been inserted at the end of the volume for added convenience.

MAH JONG FOR BEGINNERS

by SHOZO KANAI and MARGARET FARRELL - 1955, Fortieth printing 1994, 64 pages, hardback.

From parts of the preface -
Mah Jong originated and was developed in the Orient, so the rules may seem very peculiar to Americans. In writing this book, we have used the rules and regulations of the Japan Mah Jong Association.

At the beginning, the strategy in detail will not be shown. To do that would lead beginners into confusion because the playing is intricate. We shall try to explain from the first step in order to be understood by those who have never seen the implements of play.

HANAFUDA
THE FLOWER CARD GAME

Compiled by JAPAN PUBLICATIONS
1970, reprinted 1997, 94 pages, paperback.
From the front flap -
A Combination of
Chance and Skill
with an Added Touch
of Oriental Charm

Hanafuda is the only one of the several games perennially enjoyed in Japan to have originated in this country: Mah Jong, Go, and Shogi all came from China. Consequently, the hanafuda cards bear pictures of seasonal flora and fauna treated in distinctively Japanese ornamental styles. For instance, the "pine" will probably remind the Westerner of cactus, and the shawl-shaped things over the head of the man with an umbrella are unlikely to suggest rain; but that is what they are. This may sound confusing, but in fact, once a few conventions are mastered-and that takes no time with the clear explanations in this book-the reader can expect hours of enjoyment from an arresting and amusing card game.

Although there are numerous variants of hanafuda, this book concentrates on the most popular: a simple game called Matching Flowers and the more sophisticated and vastly more entertaining Eighty-eight and Koi-koi. The text carefully explains the meanings of the pictures on the cards and their values as well as how to take tricks, count points, and keep score. Sample game situations are included to enable the reader to master the rules and start having fun as quickly as possible.
