Soumya Sitaraman was bom in Chennai, India and developed her unique style of painting in California. Her vibrant paintings reflect elements of Shivite artistry and nature. She currently lives in Bangalore, India.
Chachaji loves playing with his grand-nephew Neel and Neel's best friend, transporting them to other exciting worlds with his colorful stories. Neel loves listening to Chachaji's stories of India over steaming cups of fragrant tea.
Chachaji will only drink his tea from one old, chipped, flowered teacup. His cup holds far more than sweet, spicy masala chai. It holds the story of a family and a country split in two, during the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan. When the cup and Chachaji's health both prove to be more fragile than they look, Neel's responsibility to his family heritage becomes clear.
Award-winning author Uma Krishnaswami weaves a gentle tale of family love and the power of memory, which artist Soumya Sitaraman brings to vivid life in her rich paintings. As the impact of Partition reverberates globally even today, Chachaji's Cup will captivate readers of all ages with its narrative of one family's experience.
A Teacher's Guide will be available free of charge from the Children's Book Press web site: www.childrensbookpress.org/teaching_learning.html
Book Description from the Front Cover Flap
Neel loves listening to Chachaji's many stories over steaming cups of tea. Chachaji's tales of great Hindu gods and demons and of his adventures in the Indian Army leave Neel openmouthed. But it is the tale of his great-uncle's favorite teacup that teaches Neel the most, for Chachaji's cup holds far more than sweet, spicy masala chai. When the precious cup and Chachaji's health both prove to be more fragile than they look, Neel knows what he must do.
