Book Description From the Introduction

Folksongs of Samoa is a collection of traditional, folk, love, and game songs for children. It is being introduced as a supplement to the Elementary Music Curriculum in an attempt to revive and preserve old Samoan songs. The selections in this volume lend themselves to a broad range of school and home activities. Many were taught by yesterday's Early Childhood Education teachers, whose main intention was to select tunes that could be easily sung and memorized by children. Others were passed from generation to generation through musical performance, and not musical notation.

Many of these tunes reflect folk musical motifs from other parts of the world, revealing the strong influence of Western music and the common practice of borrowing from various sources.

Book Description From the Back Cover

Folksongs of Samoa is a collection of traditional, folk, love, and game songs for children. Taught in combination with drama and dancing, these songs can enhance creative thinking and instill in the children an interest in and a love for their musical heritage. They will also help the children recall the names of great Samoan leaders, trace the origins of common phrases used by orators and chiefs, and learn more about significant events in Samoan history.
