Book Description from the Cover's Front Flap

Sang-hee knows why his father climbs a mountain each evening and lights a fire. It's a signal to the firekeeper on the next mountain to light his fire, and so on - from one mountaintop to the next, all the way to the king's palace. When the king sees a fire on the nearest peak, he knows all is well in the land.

If there's no fire, that means there is trouble, and the king will send soldiers - tall, brave soldiers with shining swords. Sang-hee knows that the fire is important, but he wishes he could see the king's soldiers . . . just once.

Set in Korea in the early 1800s, this story of a young boy's moment of decision is gracefully and suspensefully told by Newbery Medallist Linda Sue Park and illustrated with radiant paintings by Julie Downing.
